Chicago Booth Alumni Club of Singapore invites you to a presentation by Eric Rosenkranz titled "Why is Singapore called Singapore? A story told with maps" alongwith an opportunity to meet and network with fellow Booth alumni.
Eric Rosenkranz, '75 had a 30 year career in advertising before becoming a startup mentor in 2004. He has taken several companies public with one successful NASDAQ listing. He is also a map collector and amateur map historian and has given many lectures over the past years on antique maps.
The commonly accepted story for the naming of Singapore is that it comes from the Sanskrit words "singa" (lion) and "pura" (city). However, there was neither a city nor a lion on the spot, so the story is clearly untrue. There are also no written records or documents showing a settlement named Singapore on the island until the late 1700's.
Eric's presentation will look at maps from 1500 to the late 1700's to tell a different story. The presentation will be lively and engaging. Many maps from Eric's personal collection will be featured in the presentation. Among other things, viewers will learn how to calculate the circumference of the earth in 200BC, how we got the words to help us tell time, and, of course, what "Singapore" really means.
