Master in Management Program
The University of Chicago Booth School of Business is thrilled to announce it has created a new 10-month Master in Management Program, with the inaugural cohort of students beginning their studies in fall 2024.
Booth’s top-ranked Full-Time, Part-Time, and Executive MBA Programs train students who already have achieved significant professional experience and success to become dynamic leaders and advance in their careers. With the newly created Master in Management Program at Booth, outstanding recent college graduates with limited work experience will be able to study business and management with Booth’s world-renowned faculty, and develop the multidisciplinary knowledge and analytical frameworks to turn their passions, purpose, and potential into careers that matter.
“We are excited to debut Chicago Booth’s one-year Master in Management, the school’s first new degree program in 88 years,” said Madhav Rajan, Booth dean and the George Pratt Shultz Professor of Accounting. “We look forward to introducing foundational business skills to a new generation of Booth students, enhancing their impact in that first job and beyond.”
The new program is designed for ambitious recent college graduates who studied humanities, arts, social sciences, biological sciences, or physical sciences in college, and are interested in jobs that value business-oriented skills and knowledge. Applications for the first class will be available starting on September 1, 2023.
“We have seen the power of the Booth MBA for catapulting mid- or later-career professionals. Now we are eager to provide access to those just starting out in the professional world.”
“At Booth, we believe access to top graduate management education can be truly transformative,” said Starr Marcello, deputy dean for MBA Programs at Chicago Booth. “We have seen the power of the Booth MBA for catapulting mid- or later-career professionals. Now we are eager to provide access to those just starting out in the professional world. We believe completing the Master in Management Program at Booth will enable young professionals to marry their passion—whether it be physics, computer science, art history, philosophy, or other areas of the liberal arts or STEM fields—with management skills that position them for high-impact careers.”
Booth’s Master in Management Program builds upon a student’s critical-thinking skills with an analytical course of study, preparing them for a broad set of careers. Students in the program learn the fundamentals of business by taking five required courses: Microeconomics, Financial Accounting, Business Decision Modeling, Behavioral Foundations of Management, and Data Analytics.
To round out their education, students take four classes in one area of study of their choice: Analytics, Entrepreneurship, Finance, Marketing, or Strategic Management. Finally, students select one elective drawn from a variety of Booth courses.
“Students who enroll in this graduate program will have an academic experience they won’t find anywhere else,” said Michael Minnis, professor of accounting at Booth. “They will learn the fundamentals of business from the world’s best business school faculty, and they will find a master’s degree experience that is flexible and meets their individual interests, while kick-starting their careers.”
“Students who enroll in this graduate program will have an academic experience they won’t find anywhere else.”
Students in the program will also be immersed in the University of Chicago’s dynamic, diverse, and deeply supportive community. “Booth’s new Master in Management Program is an example of the University of Chicago’s commitment to create new educational opportunities for future students,” said Paul Alivisatos, president of the University of Chicago. “I look forward to welcoming the inaugural Master in Management students to the broader UChicago community in the fall of 2024.”
Entry-level positions in today’s job market are incredibly competitive. Employers demand high-potential candidates who understand the fundamentals of business. Upon completion of the program, students will possess the critical tools for success in any business environment, from understanding data to navigating organizational behavior.
“I am really excited about this program because it will allow talented students with a broad array of academic backgrounds to quickly learn and master the fundamentals of business with the world-class faculty at Booth,” said Phil Canfield, ’96, who is the CEO of Ariet Capital and the chair of the Council on Chicago Booth. “Employers will value their breadth of undergraduate academic backgrounds, and will also know the students will come to them with a solid understanding of finance, accounting, marketing, and business strategy.”
Upon completion of the Master in Management Program, students will be prepared to excel at the start of their professional journey and have foundational frameworks to make an impact throughout their career. “When a student completes the Master in Management Program at Booth, we believe they will have a significant advantage over many of their peers applying for the same jobs,” Marcello said. “Not only will they have received a multidisciplinary education in the foundations of critical thinking in business and markets from the best business school in the world, but they will also have developed friendships and a professional network that will last a lifetime.”
