Booth assistant professor of finance and FMC Faculty Scholar Constantine Yannelis has been named the winner of the AQR Asset Management Institute Young Researcher Award 2021. These annual awards recognize talented new academics producing innovative and impactful research. The award is open to junior faculty members with up to five years’ work experience at any recognized higher education institution worldwide.

In announcing the award, professors Anna Pavlova, Stephen Schaefer and Richard Portes—London Business School’s Academic Directors for the AQR Asset Management Institute—said: “We were extremely impressed by the depth and rigour of Dr. Yannelis’ research and its significant contribution to the literature on household finance, public finance, human capital and student loans. His evident passion and ability means he is a very deserved winner of the 2021 AQR Asset Management Institute prize and he is congratulated on his great success.”

Yannelis’s recent research primarily explores repayment, information asymmetries and strategic behavior in the student loan market. His academic research has been featured in the Wall Street Journal, Financial Times, the New York Times, the Washington Post, the Economist, Bloomberg, Forbes, and other media outlets. His work has been published in leading academic journals.

Yannelis has also been frequently featured in Chicago Booth Review, discussing topics such as student debt, the efficacy of stimulus checks, financial inclusion, and the COVID pandemic's effects on consumers, businesses, and policymakers.

Before joining Booth, Yannelis was an assistant professor of finance at New York University Stern School of Business. Prior to his time at NYU Stern, he worked at the United States Department of the Treasury, the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, the United Nations, and the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago as an associate economist.
