My name is Sara Markowitz, I live here in Chicago with my husband. I always knew that I wanted to kind of make an impact in the world, and for me the way to do that was through health care. My mom is a pediatric nurse and so I was always exposed to the health-care field. I went on to get my biomedical engineering degree, and I've been working in new product development of medical devices. But after about five years of that I realized that I wanted to be more on the marketing side. That’s really what drove me to Booth.

I’ve had the opportunity to meet a ton of different people in class, through student groups. One of them is the Health Care Group. It was exciting to meet other classmates who were interested in the health-care field. They've been really supportive, in terms of recruiting and helping narrow down your internship search. That really led me to ADVI, I’ll be working in their marketing oncology group. I’m making the transition from medical devices to pharmaceutical, which I’m really excited about.

One of the things that I’ve liked most about Booth is there’s just a lot of conferences and activities where you can stay up to date in the health-care world. They put on the Health-care Conference, which was a really great opportunity to hear industry leaders speak about health care right now. You had the opportunity to network with companies afterwards, which was really great for building that health-care network.

For me, I'm really excited to come to Booth and further my management and leadership skills so that someday in the future I have the opportunity to be a part of something life changing in the health-care space.
Sara Markowitz always knew she would end up in the healthcare field. Growing up, her mom's work as a pediatric nurse left an indelible mark, and Sara eventually decided to pursue a degree in biomedical engineering. She began her career in the medical devices sector, but knew she wanted to make the switch to pharmaceutical marketing and work closer with patients. That goal led her to Chicago Booth.
At Booth, the Health Care Group and student-led conferences prepared her for recruiting and even helped her land a job at AbbVie post-graduation. Now, Sara feels confident in her management and leadership skills and prepared to affect change in the healthcare industry.
Favorite Class So Far
One of my favorite classes so far at Booth has been Strategies and Processes of Negotiation. Each week we get to do in-class lessons where you’re put into a role, and you have to play that role in a negotiation. It's just been so exciting to do that with my classmates. We’re leaning different strategies that are applicable to your professional and personal life.
Outside the Classroom
I was able to attend Start Up Networking Night. Lots of local start ups are in attendance and students get the opportunity to network. There were several health-care companies in attendance, and I actually connected with one that I went on to work with in the winter quarter. I’m so appreciative that making that connection gave me the opportunity to incorporate more professional experience into my time at Booth.
