I am a back-end software developer at IBM with an undergraduate degree in Mathematics with a focus in computer science. My Booth journey is very unique: While finishing my undergraduate degree at Loyola University of Chicago, I was encouraged by strong and inspiring women to seek out my aspirations by applying to Booth that summer. I am happy I listened to their encouragement because it was not long after graduation that I received the wonderful news of my acceptance into Booth. This was a moment of immense joy for me and my family. In pursuit of providing a better life for our family, my family fled poverty and violence in their Latin American countries. Thus, it was very special to receive the news that I would be representing my family at The University of Chicago Booth School of Business. That was the start of my Booth journey, which continues to be a fantastic experience filled with ample growth, learning, and great friendships.
Tell us about yourself and take us along your journey to Chicago Booth. Our Booth trip was wonderful; I would highly recommend it to those seeking cultural immersion, knowledge of history, and growth of friendships all while enjoying stunning views. We traveled to two cities (Lima and Cusco) while visiting and learning about a variety of cultural and historical sites. I learned about the Peruvian culture and met some fantastic people on the way, both Boothies and locals. Some of my highlights were Machu Picchu and the PeruRail train ride. The scenes of our journey to Machu Picchu were surreal as they all appeared painted. Additionally, we had the wonderful experience of taking a Peruvian cooking class in Lima. I learned how to cook causa and ceviche to name a few. This was accompanied by the many local Peruvian restaurants we visited and enjoyed together as a group. It was a trip in which I learned about Peru—its culture, people, and history—all while developing close connections with fellow Boothies.
What were the highlights of your trip to Peru? The trip had plenty of social activities which were all interwoven throughout. Each activity was accompanied by plenty of time to mingle amongst ourselves. As Boothies, we were all very welcoming and social, which provided an easy way to make friends along the way. One of the great benefits of traveling with our peers is that we all shared similar interests in traveling, history, and culture which facilitated building connections amongst each other. Moreover, as we were immersed in new surroundings, we all worked to support each other by creating a safe, inviting, and fun space for everyone to enjoy Peru. Additionally, our group was very fortunate to have some wonderful tour guides who grew to be our friends. It is wonderful to say that I not only grew friendships with fellow Boothies but also with some locals in Peru. In short, I would highly recommend taking a Booth trip to anyone interested.
What social activities did you participate in during your trip? The Peru trip was wonderful in providing intermediate physical activities, which allowed all to participate. On the first day, we were given the opportunity to bike throughout Lima and go surfboarding. The idea of surfboarding in Lima elated me as I had never surfed before—what a great spot to learn how to surf with the beautiful view of Lima. Biking throughout the city, we saw the beautiful architecture that Lima has to offer its audience. After practicing our surfing stances, we were off into the sea to practice our newfound skills. I can proudly say that I stood up a few times! I even have some fun photos to prove it too. Throughout my time surfing, the instructor continued to emphasize “Focus and Relax.” His teaching resonated with me not only as I was applying my new skills to the turbulent waters but also as I navigate my journey throughout Booth. As part-time students, we learn to juggle our coursework and professional careers, which requires dedication, focus, and determination, but it is equally important we relax, stay present, and enjoy the experience. Thus, “Focus and Relax” is a memory and lesson I will continue to take with me throughout my Booth journey and on.
Booth has a large community of avid travelers and adventure seekers both within the Part-Time and Full-Time Programs. In addition, Booth has ample resources for students to get involved in cultural, outdoors, and social activities such as the #travel Slack channel, Booth Outdoors Club, and Student Life to name a few.
