The human brain is the most complex living structure known, tasked with producing our mental and behavioral existence. Whether investigating an isolated gene or a larger societal trend, social neuroscience takes an interdisciplinary approach to understanding the brain and considers how biological systems affect our social processes and behavior. In this lecture, John Cacioppo describes how social neuroscience contributes to our knowledge of the brain and how that knowledge might instruct our responses to contemporary social issues.
A pioneer in the field of neuroscience, John Cacioppo, LAB'70 is the Tiffany and Margaret Blake Distinguished Service Professor at the University of Chicago, the director of the Center for Cognitive and Social Neuroscience, the founding director of the University's Arete Initiative, and the chair of the Board on Behavioral, Cognitive, and Sensory Sciences at the National Research Council.

John Cacioppo LAB'70 (Speaker)
John Cacioppo is the Tiffany and Margaret Blake Distinguished Service Professor at The University of Chicago, the Director of the University of Chicago Center for Cognitive and Social Neuroscience, and the Founding Director of the Arete Initiative of the Office of the Vice President for Research and National Laboratories at the University of Chicago. He served on the faculty of the University of Notre Dame (1977-1979), University of Iowa (1979-1989), and Ohio State University (1989-1999) prior to joining the faculty at the University of Chicago. He has also served as an External Professor Chair in Social Neurosciences at Free University Amsterdam in the Netherlands and is a Guest Professor at the State Key Laboratory of Cognitive Neuroscience and Learning at Beijing Normal University in China. Among the awards he has received are the Scientific Impact Award from the Society for Experimental Social Psychology, a MERIT Award from the National Institutes of Health, the Distinguished Alumnus Award from the Ohio State University Department of Psychology, the Presidential Citation from the American Psychological Association, the Theoretical Innovation Prize from the Society for Personality and Social Psychology, the Award for Distinguished Service on Behalf of Personality and Social Psychology from the Society of Personality and Social Psychology, the Distinguished Member Award from Psi Chi, an Honorary Doctor of Science Degree from Bard College, an Honorary Doctorate of Science Degree from the University of Birmingham in the United Kingdom, the Patricia R.
