Koijen, the AQR Capital Management Distinguished Service Professor of Finance, Chicago Booth School of Business, and Andrew W. Lo, the Charles E. and Susan T. Harris Professor, MIT Sloan School of Management. Chicago Booth Alumni Community of Boston Working Committee member, Stephanie Saade '19 will serve as the moderator for the evening.

Professors Koijen and Lo will discuss quantitative investing using machine learning and artificial intelligence and explain how technology will impact the healthcare sector and the broader economy.

Ralph S.J. Koijen (Speaker)

Ralph S.J. Koijen is the AQR Capital Management Distinguished Service Professor of Finance and Fama Faculty Fellow at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business. He is also a Research Associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research and a Research Fellow of the Centre for Economic Policy Research. He is a co-director of the NBER Asset Pricing program. He serves as a co-editor of the Review of Financial Studies. Professor Koijen was awarded the 2019 Fischer Black Prize by the American Finance Association, given biennially to the top financial economics scholar under the age of 40. He was also awarded the 2021 Bernacer prize given to the best European economist under 40 working in macroeconomics and finance.

Professor Koijen's research focuses on finance, insurance, and macroeconomics. His research has been published in the American Economic Review, Econometrica, the Journal of Political Economy, the Quarterly Journal of Economics, the Journal of Finance, the Review of Financial Studies, and the Journal of Financial Economics. His research has been covered in popular media, such as the Financial Times, the Wall Street Journal, and The Economist.

Before joining Chicago Booth in 2018, Professor Koijen was a Professor of Finance at the London Business School and NYU Stern, and an Assistant and Associate Professor of Finance at Chicago Booth. He received his undergraduate degree in Econometrics from Tilburg University and his Ph.D. in Finance from Tilburg University.

Andrew W. Lo is the Charles E. and Susan T. Harris Professor, a Professor of Finance, and the Director of the Laboratory for Financial Engineering at the MIT Sloan School of Management.Lo's current research spans five areas: evolutionary models of investor behavior and adaptive markets, artificial intelligence and financial technology, healthcare finance, measuring the financial implications of impact investing, and financial engineering applications to funding "hard tech" innovation. Recent projects include: an evolutionary explanation for bias and discrimination and how to reduce their effects; a new analytical framework for measuring the impact of impact investing; the potential for large language models to provide trustworthy financial advice to retail investors; new statistical tools for predicting clinical trial outcomes, incorporating patient preferences into the drug approval process and accelerating biomedical innovation via novel business, financing, and payment models; and novel approaches to financing fusion energy.

Lo has published extensively in academic journals (see http://alo.mit.edu) and his most recent book is The Adaptive Markets Hypothesis: An Evolutionary Approach to Understanding Financial System Dynamics. His awards include Batterymarch, Guggenheim, and Sloan Fellowships; the Paul A. Samuelson Award; the Eugene Fama Prize; the IAFE-SunGard Financial Engineer of the Year; the Global Association of Risk Professionals Risk Manager of the Year; the Harry M. Markowitz Award; the Managed Futures Pinnacle Achievement Award; one of TIME's "100 most influential people in the world"; and awards for teaching excellence from both Wharton and MIT. His book Adaptive Markets: Financial Evolution at the Speed of Thought has also received a number of awards. He is a Fellow of the American Finance Association, Academia Sinica, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the Econometric Society, and the Society of Financial Econometrics.Lo is also a principal investigator at the MIT Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, an external faculty member of the Santa Fe Institute, and a research associate of the National Bureau of Economic Research. He has co-founded several asset management and biotech companies, and sits on the boards of several for-profit and non-profit public and private healthcare organizations.

Lo holds a BA in economics from Yale University and an AM and PhD in economics from Harvard University.

Stephanie Saade (Moderator) '19

Stephanie is a Booth 2019 alum with an interest in AI and finance. She's been a Product Manager at Google for almost 5 years, working on products such as Search, YouTube, and Nest. Prior to her experience in the tech industry, Stephanie was a management consultant at BCG and AT Kearney, working out of their Middle East offices.
