Charles W. Lake joined R. R. Donnelley & Sons Company, the largest non-government printing concern in the nation, as a sales trainee in 1946 after serving five years as an ordnance officer in the U.S. army. He became assistant to the treasurer in 1947, director of engineering research and development in 1965, director of operations in 1958, director of the Chicago Manufacturing Division in 1959, and was promoted to senior vice president in 1963.
