Social impact investing is the practice of investing capital in businesses or individual entrepreneurs with the intent of generating both economic return and public or social benefit. The transformational potential of this emerging industry has grown increasingly apparent in recent years, and invested capital is predicted to reach nearly $1 trillion by the end of this decade. As a result, impact investing has reached an elevated position on the agenda of many of the world’s most powerful countries.
Recognized by some as “the global leader for social impact investment,” the UK stands at the forefront of these efforts. Hosting the G8 Social Impact Investing Forum in June 2013 (where the US subsequently launched its own National Impact Initiative), the UK government is a strong advocate of impact investing and the value it brings to national economic growth and global development strategy.
